A productivity app that actually understands why you're stuck.
Procrastination is a common challenge among university students, affecting academic performance, emotional well-being, and long-term growth. While often seen as a time-management issue, it is frequently driven by emotional barriers like fear of failure, perfectionism, self-doubt, and feeling overwhelmed by large tasks. Many students know what they need to do but still feel unable to start. ReelFocus was created to bridge this gap as a calm, emotionally supportive productivity app that helps students begin and complete tasks with confidence.
University students aged 18 to 25, particularly those in Generation Z, frequently encounter emotional and psychological barriers that prevent effective academic task initiation and completion. Fear of failure, perfectionism, and feeling overwhelmed by complex assignments contribute to persistent procrastination, resulting in delayed starts, rushed work, and diminished academic performance. This cycle of avoidance escalates stress and further impairs students' ability to manage their responsibilities. Our core design question:
so they can start academic tasks sooner and stay on track?”
Students who fear failure
Mood check-in, journaling, and AI encouragement help them release anxiety before touching any task.
Students who feel overwhelmed
AI breaks any task into ordered, bite-sized subtasks so they always know exactly what the next step is.
Everyone who needs to focus
A calming Pomodoro timer, scenic backgrounds, and ambient music make starting feel low-stakes and sustainable.
Why Fishing?
Fishing is patient. It rewards showing up and casting your line rather than doing it perfectly. That mirrors what we believe about studying: the goal isn't to get it right on the first cast. The goal is simply to cast at all.
Two Types of Students. One Solution.
Our research revealed two distinct procrastination profiles: students paralysed by fear, and students stuck because a task feels too large. Both paths lead to the same outcome: getting started with confidence.
Cheryl has been staring at her assignment tab for 20 minutes. She's afraid to start in case she gets it wrong. The anxiety of imperfection is louder than the task itself.
Sam wants to start, but "complete the capstone" has no obvious first step. Overwhelmed by scope, his brain defaults to avoidance. He needs a clear entry point right now.
Why do students keep
putting things off?
University students don't procrastinate because they're lazy. Research shows it's rooted in unresolved emotional barriers including fear of failure, perfectionism, and the paralysing weight of tasks that feel too big to begin. A 2023 study of 3,525 Swedish university students found that procrastination is strongly linked to poor mental health. These are emotional problems, and they need an emotional solution.
Fear of Failure
Students freeze before they start because doing something wrong feels worse than not doing it at all. Perfectionism turns every task into a high-stakes performance, one that's easier to avoid than to risk failing.
Overwhelmed by Complexity
When a task has no obvious entry point, the brain defaults to avoidance. "Complete the capstone" is so vague that starting feels impossible without a clear first step, so doing nothing becomes the path of least resistance.
Poor Mental Health Impact
Procrastination compounds over time. The guilt of delay, the anxiety of deadlines, and the shame of falling behind create a feedback loop that degrades both academic performance and mental wellbeing over weeks and months.
Other Apps Miss the Point
Existing productivity apps focus on scheduling, habit streaks, or commitment devices, but none ask why a student is stuck. They assume motivation exists and just needs to be channelled, a flawed assumption for students struggling emotionally.
The 4-Step Fishing Process
Rather than overwhelming students with long task lists or blunt timers, ReelFocus guides them through four purposefully designed stages. Each stage targets a specific barrier to getting started. You release emotional weight, untangle complexity with AI, cast your focus into a structured session, and reel in a real reward when it's done.
Each step, purposefully designed
Grounded in our research on the emotional roots of procrastination, we developed a 4-stage process that takes students from feeling stuck to finishing with confidence. Each stage is purposefully designed to target a specific barrier so that no part of the journey is left to chance.
Let go of your
mental load first
Before diving into any task, ReelFocus checks in on how you're feeling. Students struggling with fear of failure are guided through a mood slider and an optional journaling moment, helping them name what's blocking them. By releasing emotional weight first, students enter their work session with a clearer head and a calmer heart.
- Emotion slider: Very Anxious → Confident
- Reason chips: Deadline, School, Family…
- Optional journaling to process self-doubt
AI breaks the task
into clear steps
Big tasks feel impossible because they're vague. When you're staring at "complete my capstone," your brain does not know where to begin, so it avoids starting altogether. ReelFocus's AI reads your description and returns a structured, sequential plan tailored to you. Each subtask is scoped to feel achievable, and time estimates are based on your past pace.
- Type, speak, upload a photo or document
- AI generates ordered, time-estimated subtasks
- Time suggested from your personal pace history

Why ReelFocus?
Most productivity tools are built for people who are already motivated. They help you organise work once you're ready to start, but do nothing to help you get ready. ReelFocus starts a step earlier: it asks how you're feeling, addresses what's blocking you emotionally, and only then walks you into focused action. No existing app combines deep emotional support with structured productivity tooling. That's exactly the gap we fill, and our testing confirms it leads to measurable results within a single week of use.
A uniquely calm and emotionally supportive productivity app that transforms studying into a peaceful fishing journey, reducing overwhelm, fear, and perfectionism by guiding students through small, confidence-building steps with supportive prompts and rewarding progress.
