Step 1: Finding the Right Watch

Our journey began with selecting a suitable fitness tracker. After exploring different options, we chose the Apple Watch. This choice was based on its strong popularity among youths aged 13 to 25 and the recent discontinuation of the Google Fitness API, which limited our integration possibilities on Android platforms.

Step 2: Sketching User Interface

With our platform selected, we moved on to designing the user interface. Using Figma, we created the low-fidelity UI of our app, focusing on core features and user flow. This step allowed us to clearly visualize the app's structure and ensure an intuitive experience for users from the outset.

Step 3: Crafting the Model

We then began developing our machine learning model where heart rate data collected by the Apple Watch is first synced with Apple Health and then passed into our app, UHealth.

This data is transformed into heart rate variability (HRV), a key physiological indicator associated with emotional and mental well-being. The HRV data is then analyzed by our model to detect the risk of depression.

Step 4: Designing Supportive Interventions

Following the development of our core features, we focused on designing intervention tools aimed at helping users manage and reduce the risk of depression.

These features include personalised music recommendations, an integrated SOS helpline, and access to curated wellness articles. Each element is thoughtfully designed to promote emotional regulation and provide comfort during moments of distress.

Step 5: Personalising the Experience

To make the experience more engaging and interactive, we introduced gamification elements, including the ability for users to create their own avatar.

We also integrated AI tools, most notably Souly, our in-app chatbot designed to support users through friendly conversations and mental wellness check-ins. Souly not only enhances user interaction within the app but also functions as a standalone tool for those who may not own an Apple Watch, ensuring that support is accessible to a broader audience.
