Our Problem
Our primary objective was to address university students’ confusion in the classroom. To gain insights into students’ study challenges and better solve their problems, we carried out a comprehensive research process consisting of:
- 124 survey respondents
- 27 interviews with both students and professors
- 22 user observations with prototype interviews
We summarize it into 3 key needs:
- Identifying knowledge gaps
- Credible, relevant information
- Discussion and collaboration with peers
How might we empower undergraduate students to recognize and fill gaps in their knowledge by providing them with efficient access to relevant and verified information?
Our Solution
Nugen Studio
A holistic solution for supporting undergraduates’ learning experiences
Overview
Nugen Studio provides two modes, one is for students and the other is for professors.
User Flow
Main Features
Student Mode
The RAG chatbot allows students to attach tags when asking questions, enabling it to retrieve and provide verified answers from corresponding files under the tags. If the required documents are not found, the chatbot transparently switches to web searches. Our RAG chatbot also provides related questions for students to better phrase their questions and tackle the problem that students do not know what they don’t know.
Hence, our chatbot simplifies and enhances the educational experience by making learning resources more accessible and tailored to students’ needs.
We introduce a new way to manage files—by tags!
- Class tags: when professor create new class, the class tag will attach to all the documents professor uploaded
- Customized tags: when users upload new files, they can create customized tags attach to the files
Our discussion board feature is integrated into the chatbot, enabling students to easily refine and post their queries with a rich-text editor. This facilitates direct interaction between students and professors on the Nugen Studio’s discussion board, fostering a community of collaborative learning and credible information exchange.
Professor Mode
Professors can create classes and add students by sharing a class code.
Professors can manage classes by adding relevant class documents and viewing discussions. All the documents will be attached with the class tag.
Professors can view the dashboard with confusion summaries (MapReduce) and statistics.
