EmpathIQ is a web based, AI-powered communication coach that uses a virtual patient simulator to train medical students in real-time, providing immediate, personalized feedback on their tone, facial expressions, and conversational skills.

Effective communication is a fundamental skill in healthcare, yet traditional training often lacks scalability and personalized feedback. EmpathIQ addresses this gap by leveraging AI to create an interactive and accessible learning experience for future medical professionals. This simulator serves as an additional tool for practice alongside in-person training, allowing users to refine their patient interactions in a controlled environment. With real-time analysis and tailored coaching, EmpathIQ equips healthcare learners with the skills needed to foster trust, demonstrate empathy, and enhance overall patient outcomes.

How might we enhance the communication training through an active communication learning tool for NTU LKC medical students that is an equivalent alternative to the current training sessions by addressing inconsistent feedback and unrealistic scenarios, so that their quality of future communication with patients improve?

Main Components

EmpathIQ is designed with dual impact in mind:

  • For Students: An engaging training experience with realistic AI-powered patient avatars.
  • For Educators: A powerful scenario creation toolkit that allows educators to design, customize, and assess dynamic scenarios with ease.

Student Training Page

A platform for student to train their communication skills. In this web page, students can select a scenario and engage in an interactive role-play, where they act as a doctor, while AI plays the role of the patient in real-time for hands-on learning. At the end of the session, students receive detailed and personalized feedback on their performance, helping them improve their skills.

Instructor Prompting Page

Behind the scenes, instructors (doctors) access a dedicated web interface designed to streamline the creation and management of communication training. In this space, instructors or doctors can create and customize clinical scenarios, and design marking schemes. This platform makes it easy to deliver high-quality, standardized learning experiences, without added complexity.
