In collaboration with

Introducing Healthy Bedok North!

Envision a vibrant health-promoting park for the residents in Bedok North and patients of the future Eastern General Hospital where social connections, active lifestyles, healing spaces and quiet retreats come together to foster a healthier community. At its heart is the Wellness Ring, an interactive social space that integrates diverse activity zones such as an arts zone, an outdoor kitchen and sensory gardens.

Project Roadmap

Understanding and Defining

Understanding Bedok North Residents

Through a small-scale community engagement, the team gained insights into the health and well-being habits and aspirations of Bedok North residents. Key findings highlighted their perceptions of physical activity, social interactions, and opportunities to better integrate these aspects into community spaces.

Defining Health

With a strong emphasis on preventive healthcare, the team sought to understand the concept of health and translate it into spaces and programs that would benefit both the residential community and hospital patients. The goal was to activate the urban green space to enhance the well-being of both groups through meaningful activities, transforming it into a park that extends healing beyond the hospital walls and encourages healthy lifestyles within the community.

Design Proposal

Wellness Park

Translating the idea of health into a design concept, the team envisions a vibrant, health-promoting park for the residents of Bedok North and future patients of Eastern General Hospital. The park brings together social connections, active lifestyles, healing spaces, and quiet retreats to foster a healthier and more connected community.

At the heart of the park is the Wellness Ring, the embodiment of the health-centered design concept. It serves as an interactive social space that integrates diverse activity areas, including an arts zone, an outdoor kitchen, and sensory gardens.

Design Validation

Prototype and Community Engagement

To validate the design, an engagement session was conducted to engage the residents of Bedok North. It showcase the Wellness Tower —a mobile pavilion that integrates the three core elements of health: mental, social, and physical well-being. The engagement allowed residents to directly experience how thoughtfully designed public spaces can foster wellness and strengthen community connections. The engagement also allowed the team to gather valuable insights into the design from the users themselves.

Wellness Park

The Wellness Park is a vibrant space for residents of Bedok North and patients of the future Eastern General Hospital. The park serves as a connecting bridge between the hospital and the community, integrating a variety of spaces aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of all its users.

The site’s zoning and layout support three wellness-focused zones:

The mental well-being zone, located near the hospital, is designed to foster calm and relaxation.

The physical well-being zone, situated near the residential area, promotes physical activity.

The social well-being zone, positioned in the center, provides a shared space for social interaction.

Park Design for Wellness

A Vibrant, Health-Promoting Park

The Wellness Park supports diverse activities that promote holistic well-being. Sports courts and fitness corners encourage physical activity, while therapeutic gardens, a reflective pond, and a sculpture park offer contemplative spaces. Social interaction is fostered through the open lawn and the Wellness Ring, a node for gatherings and community engagement.

Wellness Ring

The Wellness Ring is positioned at the heart of the park, where key circulation paths intersect between the hospital and the surrounding residential blocks.

It serves as the primary gathering node within the Wellness Park — an interactive social space that integrates a range of programmed zones, including an arts area, an outdoor kitchen, and sensory gardens.

Active Wall
Contemplative Wall
Social Circle

The Active Wall is a multifunctional planter wall designed to promote urban farming and active engagement. Featuring vertical shelving planters that support the farm-to-table concept, it provides fresh produce for the Social Kitchen. The planter cells can be adapted into storage or workstations, enhancing flexibility.

Surrounded by accessible-friendly raised planters, the space ensures inclusivity, allowing wheelchair users to participate fully in gardening activities.

The Contemplative Wall offers a tranquil, nature-immersed corner within the Wellness Ring. Featuring seating integrated with planters and vertical bamboo screens, it provides a peaceful retreat from surrounding activities.

Surrounded by greenery, the space supports sensory-stimulating activities such as meditation, journaling, and arts and crafts.

The Social Kitchen is a circular pavilion designed to foster connection and community through the shared love of food. It offers a welcoming space for preparing light refreshments, with the flexibility to host cooking demonstrations and pop-up food or gardening events.

Beyond its functional use, the space encourages bonding and the exchange of cultures and life experiences between patients and residents. Flexible seating supports casual interactions, turning everyday moments into opportunities for learning and connection.

Community Engagement

The community engagement at Bedok North was a key part of the design process, aimed at gathering feedback from residents and involving them in co-design by inviting them to share their aspirations for the future park adjacent to Eastern General Hospital.

It also provided an opportunity to showcase the Wellness Tower prototype—a mobile pavilion that integrates the three core elements of health: mental, social, and physical well-being. By presenting this scaled, distilled version of the design in a real community setting, the team sought to spark conversations, observe interactions, and gain insights into how the design could better support healthy living in everyday life.

The engagement allowed residents to directly experience how thoughtfully designed public spaces can foster wellness and strengthen community connections.

Fostering Community Health Through Digital Engagement

The engagement also featured a Digital Community Board (optimised for mobile viewing), designed to support community health, engagement, and participation. Key features of the platform include:

Events Calendar: Showcases upcoming health and wellness activities such as exercise classes, gardening sessions, and community meals.

Community Feed: Enables residents and patients to share photos, stories, and experiences to inspire and connect with one another.
