Redesigning Green Walls
From The Ground Up

Our Goal

To Design a Green Wall System that is:

Safer & Easier
Less Dependent on Site Conditions

Ultimately lowering green wall costs to boost adoption in line with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030

Subsystems

Robot

The logical processing onboard the robot is driven by a Raspberry Pi Model 3B+.

The code is implemented in Python3 and is orchestrated by a systemd service to ensure the scripts are always running when the robot is powered.

Remote Control

The Remote Control was inspired by a normal game controller, with an LCD display.

The remote control operates a robot for panel installation or retrieval, offering precise vertical movement, panel manipulation, and image capture functions. It enables efficient control over the robot's actions, ensuring accurate operations and data capture during tasks.

Robot Vertical System

The implementation of the winch system is used to drive the vertical movement of the robot. The simple pulley system is driven by a stepper motor, chosen due to its higher degree of accuracy.

The robot will automatically stop at each level when it reaches the limit switch.

Web Application

Using Vue3 and Vuetify, we created a Web Application that incorporates a range of features tailored to meet the specific needs of Managers and Maintenance Workers.

These features are designed to streamline workflows, helping to track work progress and ensure a seamless user experience across different devices.

Benefits of Our Product

Improve Worker Safety & Ease of Maintenance
By letting the robot do the wall climbing, we make it safer for the Maintenance Workers as they do not need to scale the Green Walls.
Less Site-Dependent, More Space Efficient
We minimise the amount of space required to do maintenance and reliance on smooth ground to maneuver the special equipment used for maintenance.
Reduce Overall Maintenance Cost
Based on our estimates, for a typical green facade of 10m x 5m, the system is expected to cost $1072, in line with other vertical greenery solutions. As the use of heavy lifting equipment is no longer required, the system may be capable of reaching price parity with other solutions in under 14 months, leading to savings of up to SGD 17,600 dollars in 24 months.
Digitalisation of Work Flow
We digitalised the work flow by creating a Web Application and using Firebase for all the projects' data. Additionally, the Robot will take photos of the plants while scaling the wall, which can be viewed on the Web Application. This keeps a record of the maintenance done for each project and allows for ease of tracking for Managers.
