Vita-Go!

Empowering Seniors to measure Vital Signs regularly
PROBLEM STATEMENT

“How might we use the GEIC methods to motivate and empower seniors to achieve their goals, such as being healthy enough to enjoy life, through monitoring their vital signs regularly?”

Regular monitoring is key to early detection, diagnosis and treatment for healthy living. Introducing Vita-Go, a multi-faceted solution that will cultivate in seniors the habit of long-term vital signs monitoring. We aim to increase the seniors’ understanding and enthusiasm for regular monitoring through a sustainable system, which includes a hands-on educational workshop, an innovative mobile station catering to different centres’ spatial requirements, and a gamified programme that will nudge them to track their health while having fun.

Background Review

Care Community Services Society (CCSS) operate 2 Active Ageing Centres at Circuit Road and Golden Ginger, both with different demographics of seniors. To better understand these seniors, we visited both centres and their surrounding areas. 2 observational methods were employed.

1. Environmental Audit
We noted the public spaces and amenities surrounding the centres and observed how seniors behaved in them.
We observed that the seniors had a strong sense of community and like to take ownership of the community spaces they frequent.

2. Behavioural Audit
We also observed the behaviour and circulation patterns of seniors and staff in both centres over a period of 3 hours.
We noticed that despite the two centres varying spatially, the seniors rarely passed by the monitoring corners as it tends to be out of their way.

Design Method: GEIC

From our observations, we found that the seniors lacked motivation in monitoring their vital signs and understanding the importance of doing so. As such, we realised we needed to encourage behavioural changes in the seniors and motivational theories need to be applied in our solution.

With additional background research and interviews, GEIC (Gamification, Education, Incentive, Community) are motivational theories we deduced to bridge the gap between achieving personal goals and monitoring personal health.

WHAT IS VITA-GO?

We aim to increase the seniors’ understanding and enthusiasm for regular monitoring through a sustainable system, which includes a hands-on educational workshop, an innovative mobile station catering to different centres’ spatial requirements, and a gamified programme that will nudge them to track their health while having fun.

DESIGN CONCEPT

In line with Healthier SG, active ageing and encouraging independent mobility is a key concept in our design. Maintaining familiarity in our designs is also important for the seniors. As such, the MRT and its map is the guiding theme for Vita-Go!.

In Vita-Go: Play!, players will discover their hobbies and develop skills as they learn about the importance of health monitoring. Players will journey through Singapore while managing their health! To do this, players will trade with one another, collect money and level up their skills!

How to Play video!

Health Counters

Health counters were a constant component from our iterations to the final prototype to ensure measuring is central to the game.

Coin tokens and Cards

Coin tokens and laminated, large cards are used to ensure easier handling for the seniors as well as durability.

Game Board

We created a custom game board shape to achieve a unified look with the mobile station.

Vita-Go: Measure! is a mobile station that houses the monitoring devices, board games and user manual. Leveraging the familiarity and practicality of trolleys, we created a mobile solution that could easily adapt to different spatial needs within the centres. This station ensures flexibility and optimises usability and accessibility for all.

Trolley

We hacked a trolley into our mobile station as it is related to the MRT concept and familiar to seniors. This continues the concept of independent mobility and reduces the resistance to something new for the seniors. The trolley is also mobile, which allows flexible use at both centres.

Lifting Mechanism

This mechanism was created to enable easy removal of the contents of the station when seniors open the trolley.

Tracks

Tracks were installed in the back of the trolley to ensure the trays would be lifted up vertically upright to prevent swinging inside the trolley.

Vita-Go: Learn! consists of a workshop for the seniors and infographic posters for the centres.

The workshop aims at empowering seniors with the knowledge and skills for effective vital sign monitoring. Seniors are guided through on how to use the monitoring devices and the Health Buddy app to record their measurements. After this, a game tutorial offers an engaging and interactive way to reinforce what they have learnt, along with picking up Vita-Go: Play!, completing comprehensive workshop experience.

To ensure information from the workshop will be always available, infographic posters were made for the centres.

FINAL USER TESTING

This section details our final user testing with the seniors on the final version Vita-Go!. User testing was actually conducted at every stage of iteration to gather feedback from the seniors, leading to a co-design process throughout the project.

Our user response to Vita-Go was generally positive, with the seniors finding the game to be fun and engaging with the competitive aspect. In their feedback, seniors also mentioned they would play the game multiple times again and measure their vital signs while doing so. Seniors also found the design of the game and trolley welcoming and were excited when they recognised the MRT map. The workshop was also found to be helpful in guiding them through the game.
