Proj E05 – Parcyl – Automated Medicine Dispensary

Automated Prescription Medicine dispensary

Introducing Proj E05 – Parcyl – Automated Medicine Dispensary

Parcyl is a technological startup that provides an automated medicine dispensing solution via a secure vending machine plugin with an integrated print labeller and a smart verification system. Parcyl aims to decentralise medicine collection by allowing patients to collect their prescriptions at their convenience. Concurrently, Parcyl promotes sustainability by reducing carbon emissions emitted by excessive deliveries and the commercial production chain, while remaining accountable and accessible to all users.

1 in 3 Singaporeans have a chronic illness.

Most chronic patients queue at the doctor’s for up to 2 hours to receive their prescriptions, even when they don’t need to consult the doctor.

The Singapore government is currently rolling out the HealthierSG scheme to shift chronic patients from the public healthcare sector to GPs. However, now the GPs are facing logistical issues in storing medications under HealthierSG as well as managing increased workload.

What if we can help the GPs in decentralising healthcare while adhering to regulations?

Our Value Propositions

  • There is reduced labour cost as one remote pharmacist can serve more patients.

  • The product is easy to set up, has low maintenance costs, and requires minimal supervision to function.
  • Our solution can label a variety of box sizes, so we are able to cater to a wide range of products.

  • Medicine boxes do not need to be repackaged for our product and will work as is.
  • Our system is tamper-proof as it is secured within the vending machine.

  • We use Two-Factor Authentication to ensure that only the right patient will receive their prescriptions.

  • We use Computer Vision to verify that the right medicine is being dispensed and labelled.
  • Our solution only takes a minute to dispense a prescription, about 90% faster than queue durations.

  • Patients can minimise their travelling time as we will be located conveniently in the neighbourhood.

  • Our system is fully automated, allowing it to run 24/7 and patients to collect their prescriptions at any time.
  • Our whole process is kept simple, with only a few steps necessary for the patient.

  • Our UI is also simple and straightforward in order to help our target demographic, the elderly, to use our system easier.

Patient's Flow

  1. Once the doctor uploads the prescription, the patient will receive an SMS containing a link to our website.
  2. The patient can enter their NRIC to the website for Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Once the NRIC is verified, a QR Code for the vending machine will be generated.
  4. Scan the QR Code on a Parcyl vending machine to collect the prescription!

How does it work?

  1. DISPENSE
The medicine falls along a guided track onto the conveyor belt.
  2. VERIFY
The camera captures an image and using computer vision, checks if it is the correct medicine and the orientation of the medicine.
  3. ALIGN
The linear actuator pushes the medicine to be aligned with labeller.
  4. LABEL
Using photo-electric sensors, the labeller is lowered to the exact height of the medicine. After which, the label is pasted on the medicine.
  5. RELEASE
Another camera verifies that the label is pasted correctly, then the labeled medicine is moved to the pick up port.

Computer Vision

Computer Vision is used to:

detect the presence of the medicine box in order to start the process,

detect the angle of the box in order to align with labeller,

and to recognise the text and make sure it matches the prescription details.
