IoT-Enabled Gait Monitoring System

Introducing SafeGait

Global warming affects all countries, including Singapore, and increases the risk of workplace heat injuries. Aiming to create a cost-effective solution to improve workers’ safety, SafeGait is a compact device with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which can transmit data via Bluetooth to a mobile app. The app syncs with a cloud-based dashboard for real-time monitoring of workers’ gait, enabling managers to detect abnormal patterns early.

PROBLEM

Singapore experienced its hottest year on record in 2023, with temperatures soaring due to climate change and the urban heat island effect. As a densely built city with high humidity, prolonged heat exposure poses significant risks, particularly for outdoor workers. Without adequate monitoring and intervention, heat stress can lead to severe health issues, reduced productivity, and economic losses.

WHY GAIT MONITORING?

Gait parameters are measurable aspects of walking that provide insights into a person’s movement patterns. Fatigue affects movement long before noticeable symptoms appear, making gait analysis a powerful early detection tool. Subtle gait changes, like shorter steps or instability. signal early fatigue—impacting safety and productivity. By leveraging gait monitoring, we provide proactive safety insights, helping workers stay productive while minimizing heat-related injuries.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Our System Architecture

Wearable IMU

Captures raw motion data from the user’s waist in real time using a built-in inertial measurement unit (IMU)

Mobile App

Performs on-device gait analysis using custom algorithm

Cloud Database

Receives processed gait data from the app, stores it securely, and handles requests from the dashboard

Dashboard

Visualizes workers’ gait patterns and alerts abnormalities using real-time data pulled from the cloud
